From Pines to Castles
Chapter Thirty 30
Sky felt good being back in the UK. He was a Brit and he would never change that. Now that he was back, he clearly saw that this protected him from the Hollywood perverted lifestyle. It was strangely attractive to feel you could do anything you wanted, that everything could be bought easily and that being close to powerful people could provide you with benefits, with your career, or any fantasy and demons you might have. He realised, it was not a good place for him. He was too easily influenced, too attracted to the infinite god-like feelings it provided. Actors are narcistic, by definition. You need all the attention on you, you need to feel that you are the best, the most beautiful and that everyone wants you. Having a fandom entertains your ego and feeds it to the point you start to believe it’s all you need. Having Maeva in his life saved him, kept him grounded and his feelings for her awakened him when he started to get lost within his popularity. It didn’t know if the pull would have been as magnetic had he been younger and hungrier for fame. With age and experience, he felt he was wiser. One time in LA, he had gone back to a party without Maeva. He wanted to have a pint with the boys. What was going on there was not exactly what he had envisioned. He thought only Maeva had gone home, but when he got back there, there were only a few young girls left, and the men were taking turns with them. He unsure how old they were, and he had had some issue with something of the sort in the past. They were pretty and the brothers in arms atmosphere incited to the act, but he left after two drinks and a discussion with some guys who seemed uninterested by the girls. Maeva and the baby were permanently in his thoughts, so it was easy to call it a night, although he saw a lot of famous individuals look at him suspiciously as he was hanging with the gay boys. That was exactly the kind of stuff that rumors were made from. Brits seemed to be a little too “stuck-up” to behave that way in the UK. It would have been unsavory. Most celebrities did let go of their proper upbringing when they went to America. It was like they felt protected by the distance that the ocean created. So, he was back and ready to be a proper daddy to a beautiful love-born child.
Maeva, on the other hand, was exhausted. Now almost at 39 weeks of pregnancy, she felt bloated like a balloon. Her feet and legs were swollen, and her blood pressure numbers were precarious. She waddled about in a very inelegant manner and, felt Sky didn’t recognize the woman he married. He seemed content enough. He had found a way to stay with her until the birth and hoped he would be able to be with her to parent this child. She felt so fatigued all the time; she had trouble imagining that she would feel good enough to take care of their baby. Yvonne was always there for her, as usual, and Maeva was so very grateful for her presence. Since their return from LA, the only thing Maeva was able to do was design some jewelry would make later and write scenarios. It seemed she had made a reputation for herself as a good writer, very easy to work with. She had a knack for dealing with difficult actors, they said. She remembered her first time with Sky’s co-star. The girl was difficult at first but with time, as she saw that Maeva really took her opinion and did make some changes for her, she became quite friendly. Sky even said she was friendlier with him and easier to work with. Maeva received a hefty sum for that contract. She has never been so financially comfortable herself. Naturally, Sky took all the spending on himself, as part of his team’s expenses. She could feel herself becoming more and more involved with his career.
The day finally arrived when contractions started. Maeva had butterflies in her stomach, and her bowels were letting go of all that was stored in her body. Maeva knew the process and quickly understood what was happening. She was in bed near Sky who was sleeping deeply. She nudged him a little, calling his name softly. He didn’t move. He looked child-like when he slept. Such a big man looking so little. She smiled. Suddenly, as if he sensed her, he opened his eyes.
“Is it time?”, he asked sitting up in bed.
“Yes, my love, better get Victor to get the car ready for us.”, she said. She winced as a contraction was in full mode.
“Yea, yea.”, he got up quickly and was leaving the room, naked.
“Sky, Sky, put some clothes on!”, Maeva said loudly. He stopped, looked at himself and made a face. He ran for his short, put them on, and went out of the room like a flash bolt. She could hear the commotion he was creating. Yvonne came in and went to help Maeva get up.
“There, there Mrs. Hawthorne, is it very painful? Can you get up? I know the birth bag is in the car already.”, women always think alike and Yvonne looked around assuming Maeva had put the clothes she wanted to wear somewhere in the room. The were on the lounge bench. She went to get them after making sure Maeva was fine sitting down on the side of the bed, helped her dress while stopping and massaging Maeva back during a contraction. Just as Maeva was ready, Sky came in the room all dressed up.
“Do you need me to carry you, babe?”, he asked, eager to help her.
“I don’t think so, just let me hold on to you. I can’t go very fast. How far away is the hospital?”, Maeva asked as she noticed the contractions’ intervals were getting closer.
“About 15 minutes, my Love. Do you remember, we did the trajectory together? And at this time of the night, no one will be on the road. Victor will drive the Rolls Royce. I will stay with you.”, Victor was ready in front of the entrance with the car door open for them. He helped Sky to make Maeva get in without too much strain. Yvonne hovered around giving her last words of advice to Maeva, who was already in her labor bubble and was concentrating on the contractions. During the ride there, Sky could feel her squeeze his arm rhythmically, but she did not make a sound. He caressed her hair, kissed her head and soothed her with soft encouragement words.
The night was dense and Sky has been right. There was not a soul in sight. Providence was with thew. All the traffic lights were green. A team was waiting for them at the Women’s Center in London. They welcomed her and Sky, offered a wheelchair, which Maeva refused. Sky was surprised, but she was the boss. The nurse accompanying them informed Sky that birth was always faster if you walked and crunched during labor. Maeva had refused to attend prenatal classes. She didn’t want a bunch of women and men thirsting over her husband. She was to be the center of attention for once. It was her 15 minutes of fame!
Even though she was having the baby, the health team was mostly circling around Sky, which was to be expected. Her husband was also expecting it and deterred anyone who tried to communicate with him, rather then directly with Maeva. Any questions that were asked, he would ask her and let her answer. All through labor, he was kneeling behind her, holding her while she was crouching and breathing through the contractions. Every once in awhile, they came to verify her blood pressure. The nurse would always just stare at Sky. At one point, Sky asked everyone to leave them alone. They would call if they felt something was amiss. At one point, Maeva turned towards him, kissed him and put her head on his chest, she keeled instead of crouching.
“I am tired Sky. Can you hold me up? I think the baby is almost here. I only need to push but I have no energy left. Please help me.”, she said almost crying. She was sweaty, her hair was damp and all curly from so much heat she was emanating, she was white as a ghost and felt lifeless and almost on the brink of unconsciousness. He didn’t know what to do, but he felt he should lift her, put her on the bed in an upright position, half crouching, half sitting and held her while coxing her to push one last time. She pushed once, she pushed twice, and grunting loudly she pushed one last time.
“Sky, Sky, he is coming out, grab him, don’t let him fall.”, and the baby slid out, followed by a shower of bloody amniotic fluid. They let go of each other and went down to catch the baby.
This is how little baby girl Hawthorne was born, pulled out of his mother by both of them, at 4 am in the night under the Orion’s Belt. Maeva took the baby and Sky wrapped a towel around her trying to dry her as much as he could. He passed on the baby to Maeva who uncovered her and placed herself prone and the baby, supine on her chest. They were all smiles.
“Do you have another blanket to put over her and me. It’s the best way to keep her warm.”, she looked round as did Sky. He just took the warm fleece blanket from the bassinet and, unfolding the white blanket, he covered them both. He was the witness to the most beautiful scene in the world. The baby was licking his mom and trying to find her nipple. Sky gave his baby a little push higher and she latched on, awkwardly for a few seconds and then she pushed herself with her pudgy little fists and grabbed on like a pro.
“Wow, I didn’t know she could do that already.”, his eyes were watery.
“She is amazing. Babies are born with innate reflexes that have been there for millions of years. This is one of them.”, she said just looking at her baby nurse. “Did they bring a little hat, a Tuke?” Sky looked around the room, ended up looking through the commode.
“Didn’t we have one? In your luggage?”, asked Sky remembering the purchase.
“Yes, we do have one but considering that is kind of bloody, I would have preferred to get one from here first.”, she was looking at Sky looking on the shelves.
“Ha, ha!, Here is one. There’s actually a few here. I am choosing the pink one. I’m not taking into consideration her possible gender fluidity.”, they both smiled.
Once the baby was asleep and in Sky’s arms, Maeva refreshed and cleaned up. That is when they both saw the first snowflakes of the winter.
“Let’s call her Neve? How about it, Maeva? It suits her, doesn’t it?”, he said looking at his baby and placing her on her mom again, in case she would want to breastfeed again.
“What a beautiful name and a wonderful idea! I love that name. We will always be reminded that the was born with the first snow of the new year. I also looked at the constellations over us in the sky. She was born under the Orion’s Belt. Could we give her, as a second name? Oria?, Maeva said.
“Lady Neve Oria Cantley-Hawthorne. That sounds perfect.”, Sky said looking at his girls, proudly.
There was a knock at the door. The doctor came in and saw that everything was going well. She could not help but look at Sky. He was shirtless and wearing jogging pants. He quickly went to slip on a t-shirt. The doctor had to examine Maeva’s uterus and see if she was bleeding too much. All seemed fine. She took a quick look at the baby, she had a nice rosy color, her blue eyes were open and bright.
“You have a beautiful 3,714 kg baby there Mr. and Mrs. Hawthorne. A pediatrician will be by this afternoon to examine your daughter. It is a routine check. Nothing to worry about. OK? Do you any concerns? Questions?”, she asked, walking towards the door.
“When ca we be discharged?”, asked Maeva. Sky was surprised by her eagerness to leave.
“Once the baby is checked and if the baby is feeding well, you should be getting your leave of us.”, the doctor said.
It was only once they were back alone and left to themselves that Maeva was able to notice the room and all its amenities. It was a 2-room suite. The bed, which was a king bed for the whole family, was comfortable and looked like any luxurious bed frame and mattress you could find in hotels. There was a princess bed for the baby. They must have a car bed for baby boys, thought Maeva. They were not into gender neutral yet. The windows were numerous and from floor to ceiling, with electric blinds she could remote control. A commode was filled with baby products, diapers, wipes, facecloths, blankies, sanitary napkins, soothing creams and anything needed for the baby and her. Sky had told her that the other room included a sofa bed, table and chairs, a fridge with beverages, snacks and ready to serve meals, a huge tele and a beautiful fireplace with rocking chairs. She has visited the bathroom already; it was adjacent to the bedroom and had all the bathroom accessories you could wish for. The bath was huge, mostly for women who wanted a water birth. Maeva wondered what the fee was for such a birthing suite. Now that all the hard work was passed, that the baby was well, and that she had made it through unharmed, Maeva was able to enjoy all the luxury and fuss everyone was making over them. But she was annoyed when they thirsted over Sky, even though she was conscious it was difficult not too. He was quite unkept right now as he had a rough time with her, but he was so beautiful with his daughter in his arms. His naïve blue eyes, looking into Neve’s. Maeva easily recognized that her daughter had her dad’s features. Sky interrupted her thoughts, bringing the baby to her.
“She is hungry I think.”, he said unwrapping her and passing her on to her mother. “Isn’t she a beauty!”, he said. “Just like her mom.”, he kissed Maeva. “Thank you. Thank you for giving us the best gift we could ever ask for. I love you babe.”, he looked on as Maeva place the baby on her side and helped the baby latch on properly. He noticed that her breast had gotten larger. Much more voluminous than they were before. He felt a tickle in his groin and tried to change his mindset. Right now, they were made to feed his baby, not for his sexual pleasure. He found that it was quite confusing to become a father, and this whole experience of pregnancy, labor and delivery didn’t affect him physically but was certainly confusing. He wondered if all men had those confusing thoughts and feelings. His wife’s body was beautiful and exciting to him. All through the pregnancy, he found her beautiful and sensual. The way her body changed under the effect of the extra oestrogens produced, the fullness, the darker pigmentation of the areolas and her belly line, the swollen and vivid red vulva, including the wetness and extra desire she had for sex. It made him feel more desired, more virile and sensual. But then, assisting your wife through the experience of labor and birth showed you her body in a whole different perspective. The suffering was the worst as you felt completely powerless and guilty feelings overpowered you as you were the one that got her pregnant in the first place. Then, seeing her body in crude neon lights and looking at her sensual parts in such a mechanical way, completely reversed the excitement you usually feel when looking at her. It could almost turn you off. He had heard men say they didn’t want to be present for labor or delivery. Others mentioned that the trauma they experienced turned off the desire for their wife. He understood that it could be traumatic. Receiving a gush of amniotic liquid rendered bright red with blood was surprising to say the least. The bleeding that occurred after and the placental coming out of the vagina was also unexpected to him. He had heard that some women hemorrhaged or ripped the membrane around their vagina. This didn’t happen and he was grateful for that. He was also grateful that she was crouching so he did not have a crude view of her genitals. He only saw the baby slipping out, which was incredible to see.
The pediatrician’s visit confirmed Neve was as healthy as she could be and that she was feeding well.
“So we can leave, right?”, he walked to the door. “They must have some papers for us to sign so I will go and see if I can hurry up the process.”, Sky left.
Maeva thought he would simply have to sign a few autographs or have his picture taken. Neve was sleeping on her. She knew some of the staff would pack her things. She would ask Sky to pack the few private things she had brought here. She closed her eyes and taught she would rest a little waiting for him to get back. Now that the excitement of the new baby was dwindling down, she felt so tired. She was so content and relaxed. She made sure she was holding her baby securely. She slowly started to fall asleep.
She felt movement in the room before she opened her eyes. It must be Sky, she thought. Upon seeing she was asleep he would stay quiet and let her get some rest. She suddenly felt movement on her arm. She remembered how the baby was positioned and if the baby was touching her arm, it meant she had moved too much. She opened her eyes to reposition Neve. What she saw made her gasp with fright. A woman was trying to take Neve from her.
“Hey, what are you doing? Let her go.”, she screamed. The emergency button should have been on her left. It was gone. She put both her arm around Neve and moved her body so she could use her feet to kick at the stranger. At the same time, Sky came in unaware of what was happening to his family.
“Hey, what is this? Leave them alone?”, he run to her and grabbed the women from behind and arm locked her. Maeva was now getting up from the bed with Neve and running to the door. As she was going exiting the room, she heard Sky say something.
“Caroline? You? What is this? Maeva, call the security and the police and go somewhere safe. I will hold her until the police arrives.”, the girl, Caroline, was still trying to fight back and get away. Sky was too strong and knew how to restrain. “What’s wrong with you? Why would you do this?”, he said still not understanding how she could want to harm the baby.
“Let me go, let me go. You filthy bastard. How could you leave me for an old rag like her?”, Sky turned his head when he heard someone enter the room. Security guards came in and took over from Sky.
“Do you know her?".
Yes, I do. her name is Caroline White. She was a gilfriend of mine awhile back.", said Sky, very upset.
"Go to your wife Mr. Hawthorne. We will keep her here until the police gets here.”, the Chief of Security told him. They were now two men on her, restraining the woman. Sky went running out in the hall. He heard the intercom calling a code in to everyone. Workers were pushing beds and wheelchairs taking the patients to safety. The noise of the rolling beds, chairs and the doors opening and closing loudly made for such a chaos. Two other security officers barged in by the staircase door.
“Are you OK? Where is the assaulter?”, Sky nodded he was OK and pointed to the door behind him. Two police officers came right after the security guards, and they all entered the birthing room. He had no idea where they had taken Maeva and the baby.
“Where is my wife? My baby?”, but he was asking the bare walls. No one was there.
