From Pines to Castles

 Chapter Forty-Three                                                       43

Maeva spent the next day with her daughter and this time she brought her and Yvonne to Disneyland. She used Sky’s star power, which she rarely did, to have the full tour in a special cart. It was right fir Neve to benefit from her dad’s stardom, or that what Maeva firmly believed. This way, they were also protected from fans or, any other threats. The experience was wonderful. She doubted that Neve would remember, but she had recorded most of what she could. It was late when they were finally driven back to the car.

Once home, everyone went to sleep. They were completely exhausted from the strong sun and the fun activities. Maeva laid in her huge bed overlooking the lake. She was also exhausted, but sleep evaded her. Thoughts of Sky, how he looked at her, the sincerity of his love. What she found out today about that ‘club’, made her start to doubt. She knew he often stayed at this Star’s mansion when she decided to go home. Being pregnant stopped her from drinking, and she was always tired during that period they were at their Sherwood home. She knew he liked to have a pint with the boys. Could he have been involved in what ever this was? Was she ready to suspect that he was part of that club? She needed to visit that building Michelle talked about. Remembered the camera at Michelle’s, she should expect some also around the building. What should she do about them? She started to plan her visit and sleep slowly mixed her thoughts with a dream.

She woke up realizing that everyone was up. She looked across the room and said “Time”. It was 10 o’clock. She could not believe it. She slept in. She put some shorts on, brushed her teeth, washed her face and pinned her hair up, before going downstairs. She was surprised to see Neve and Yvonne still having breakfast at the island.

“Good morning, Mrs. Maeva!,” said Yvonne.
“G’mama?, said Neve imitating Yvonne.

“Good morning, Neve! I can’t believe you are still all at breakfast. I believed I overslept.”

“We all overslept Mrs. Maeva. Coffee?”, asked Yvonne, knowing the answer full well. She was already making it.

“Yes, thank you Yvonne.”,

“Thyou, Vonvon”, repeated the little parrot girl. Neve had been talking more and more. Maeva laughed and to Neve to hug and kiss her.

“Good morning, Neve. Did you sleep well?”, Neve kept on eating nodding with her head repeatedly. “I didn’t hear her nor you talking to her on the monitor.”

“We were quiet not to wake you, right Neve? We didn’t want to wake Mama. She needs her beauty sleep.’

“What are you planning for today?, Maeva asked. She smiled and thanked Yvonne for the coffee.

“I think we should take it easy. Yesterday was a tough day for all of us. We will play in the morning and maybe watch a little bit of home movies after our nap, right Neve?”, said Yvonne.

‘OK. I need to go downtown today. I might have to be out also this evening. Do you remember the security guy from yesterday. His name? He was so discreet, but was really good, wasn’t he?”, inquired Maeva. She thought it might be better to be accompanied for what she was planning for today. Yvonne was thinking.

“Did he tell us his name? Oh, yes. He introduces himself as “Lee”, I don’t recall his family name.”, she said sipping her coffee.

“OK, Lee. I will need him as a driver and a security agent today.”, she took her phone and called the agency Sky always used. “Yes, good morning, Maeva Hawthorne here. I will need a car, driver and security agent. Just one person. Is Lee, the agent I had yesterday, available? Yes, from noon until around midnight? Yes, I will be coming back home this evening. OK. I will be waiting for your call. Thank you.”, Maeva ended the conversation wondering if she would wait until he was free or just trust another agent. She saw neve had finished her breakfast. She was now playing with the crumbs and squishing the last pieces of cheese. Maeva smiled and got up to get a washcloth to clean her up. Yvonne had started to get up but Maeva hand stopped her so that she remained sitting. Maeva loved to fully take care of her daughter. It was nice to have Yvonne. She was aware that she was lucky to be able to have almost live-in help. It allowed her to work and to do what she would be doing today without worrying about Neve.

She took her shower wondering what she would wear. She wanted to be inconspicuous today. All black, hair tied back covered by a black handkerchief. No make-up. She would wear black walking shoes and sunglasses. She would have a side wallet hanging on her hip under her sweater but would bring a tote bag with things she needed and would leave it in the car. Lee was on time and greeted her opening the car door. This time, she got his full name; Lee McGuire.

“Thank you, Lee.”, she said as she got in. “Just go to downtown LA. I will let you know the precise area once we get there.”, she settled down in her seat, closing her eyes and hoping it will go as she planned. She had been to the building. Had observed it. It wasn’t used in the afternoon. She also noticed they had a back road in that neighborhood. She didn’t pass there. She had taken the drone once and set it there flying it real low. She knew how to fly it now. She practiced a lot at the domain. Mainly to pass the time, but she also found it was a simple and easy way to watch the vast landscape. She had also been able to use some afternoons, to park her car at the corner in such a way that she would see any vehicles using the back road. Every Wednesday at two o’clock in the afternoon, a laundry truck picked up some tagged bags and delivered boxes. She figured it was sheet and towels. She had used the drone to spy on them from a distance. The drone had a 20X focus, so she was able to see a lot from the next street. It was a well-run team; one man took out the boxes from the truck and brought them to the back door. Two women went in with a card key. They stayed inside for about twenty minutes and came out each with two large, tagged bags. As soon as the man saw them, he would go over to pick up the bags for them, and they slid in the boxes together. They came back out immediately just letting the door slam shut.

Maeva had asked Lee to sign an NDA the first time. She learned for the best, didn’t she? This time, she asked Lee to let her of at Rodeo Drive. She wanted to shop, incognito, she told him. Then, she simply started to walk towards the Club’s building. She had done it before, and she knew it would take her 20 minutes. She stopped twice. Once in a high-class children clothes store and bought Neve a cute outfit she has spotted the week before. The second time, she went into a café, ordered a coffee and a sandwich. Put the tray in a back area. Went to the bathroom with sandwich and coffee which she emptied in the garbage. She came back out, sat down with her back to the café, put her mug on the tray. After a minute or two, she left by the back door. She knew there were no camera in this place.

The building was small and high with about six floors, she counted. That’s what made it so difficult to observe the decorative statues around the roof. She had used the drone to see them previously and was chocked. They were little male cherubins holding their penises, seemingly to pee. That’s when she decided she had to know more.

She walked over to the back road. As she expected, the delivery van was backing up in the club’s back driveway. She walked briskly. She pulled her handkerchief over her face a little more and, head down, passed on the side of the van that was close to the garage to the left. Keeping her head down, she peaked in front at the back door of the building and right to the other side of the van. They delivery guy was in the van. She turned on a switch and ran inside going directly in the first door she saw and entered the space. She pushed back the handkerchief from her face a little. There seemed to be no camera in that room. Still, she knew she shouldn’t take too long. The room seemed like an office. Could she be this lucky? No cameras and exactly were she wanted to go? Maeva looked around the desk, found some paperwork, looked at it. It was a planner. She took pictures of the last few pages with her cell. She moved the mouse of the computer. It opened to a locked window. She expected that, took a pic of the interface and then opened the source page and took a picture of the screen. She opened some drawers and saw invoices; also took pictures, as many as she could, then put everything back. She looked in the other drawers. There was a hardcover notebook. She opened it, found a password. Typed it in the computer. The desktop appeared. She also took a picture of it. She easily saw a file called ‘Club’. Click on it and took a picture of the interface without looking at it. She quickly opened the first file on the left. The folder was called ‘Songs’, which found strange. Wondering if she would find devil worshipping hymns, she clicked on that file. She was then in front of numerous folders all titled ‘Song’, but all with a different date. She took a picture and quickly clicked on the first one on the left. Same date and then a number from one to fifty. She clicked on the number one. She gasped. Took a picture. She opened another one quickly. Took a picture again. She stopped herself at five, thinking, she had to get out of there. She closed all the windows. Put the computer to sleep, pulled her handkerchief over her head, switched on the lights before opening the door to the office. She let herself out, put her head down and walked briskly towards to the corner. Took off her gloves, her handkerchief and took of the long black shawl she was wearing on top of her clothes, folded it and laid it over her arm. She then opened up her black contoured sports jacket. She had a beige t-shirt under it. She untied her hair, shook her head and fluffed her hair. She slid her sunglasses on top of her head. She regretted not having her tote bag. She turned on a street as her cell was indicated a quicker route to go downtown. There were some homeless individuals sleeping on the sidewalk. She thought about turning around. Then, she looked at her long black shawl. She slowly covered a lady with it. She never woke up. Maeva then took off her sports sweater and put it over a young girl. She was passed out. Maeva did turn around and took the long way to Rodeo Drive. A longer way you know was better than a shorter way you don’t know, she told herself.

After, about ten minutes, she went into the first store she found. She wanted a new jacket. She asked a sale agent to help out. It took a little while for her to find it. She went to a few other stores, looked at different things, but didn’t buy anything. She texted Lee to pick her up exactly where he dropped her off.

“Thank you very much Lee. It’s pretty hot out there. I was dressed way too hot.”, said Maeva as she got in the back of the car. “Now, my friend said she would meet me at the only bar that serves food between the 4th and 7th. Would you know which one that is?”, she asked him.

“No, I don’t know much about bars Mrs. Hawthorne, but I can look it up in my cell for you.”, said Lee.

“It’s OK. I will.”, answered Maeva. “You don’t go out much do you?”, she said, smiling.

“Well, I do know, there are about 4 or 5 bars around there.”, Lee said, doubtful she would find the right one.

“Oh, OK. Is there one that serves food?”, Maeva asked. Lee frowned thinking. He was quite handsome in an unremarkable sort of way. He seemed to have hazel eyes but as he wore sunglasses all the time, she would have to look when he took them off, which was almost never.

“Yea, I am seeing it on the car GPS. I remember the FoodBar does.”, he told her. He smiled; she laughed.

“The FoodBar, OK. I am hungry. Would you join me?”, she said.

“Ah, umm… OK. It is against the agency’s policy to eat with clients.”, he said.

“With me, it’s an obligation. You can say that I felt I needed security in the bar.”, she answered.

“I appreciate the offer, Mrs. Hawthorne, but anyone would be to recognize me, I would lose my job. I do need it.”, he said shily.

“OK. I understand. Maybe you can come back in about two hours. If it takes longer for me to find the bar, I will text you, ok?”, she got out of the car. She could feel her heart slowing down. She was still stressed though. She had promised herself she would never do this again. Her childhood had been difficult, and she did some breaking and entering. Her brother, mother and she needed to eat. Maeva never got caught. She had never told her childhood story to anyone. She never talked about her brother, even if she thought about him everyday. He had not been as lucky as she had. He died in jail. Her mother passed away of a broken heart a few months after. She tried to help her, but Maeva was the one who taught him how to steal. Her mother hated her. She was the bad one in the family. She could still see her mom, hirsute hair, feverish eyes, and just skin and bones, laying in her bed on dirty white sheets. She couldn’t lift her alone anymore. Her mom was in so much pain; she preferred not to wash the sheets. She still felt guilty about it. She had done what she did today often in her youth, just to try and get food on the table. She was out of practice. Or was it that she didn’t stress about these things when she was younger. Maybe it was because she didn’t have anything to lose back then.  She always wondered when Sky would ask her about her parents. He never did.
