From Pines to Castles
Chapter Twenty-Five 25
Maeva slept much better that night. Her windows were open and she had a cool breeze on her. Cool air always made her feel alive somehow. She fell asleep dreaming of Sky and her baby. They were looking for new home. The one she wanted was hidden in some bushes and had rooms opening into other rooms and some hidden huge room big enough to present theatre and seats for an audience. It turned into an auditorium-type high ceiling ball room. She kept looking for someone but never found him.
She woke up with her heart beating hard in her chest. She realized she was home and all would be well soon. She turned to check her phone right away. Joe had not called. She looked for her mutt under the blanket. The little rat slept with when Sky was away. When he was home, she would sleep between Dogo and Mihikin, taking in the big dogs’ warmth. Poor thing, she suffered from some kind of anxious ailment that made her scratch herself raw and bite all the fur from her legs and belly, thus the name, the rat.
She got up, called to Yvonne that she was up and went into the adjoining bathroom to pee, brush her teeth and shower. She then went into her walk-in closet or room as she called it. It was so big. She couldn’t believe it was filled with clothes already. She remembered she had to pick up her gown for the BAFTA Awards show where Sky would be attending to present an award. She could hardly believe she would be walking in with him, pregnant and, showing it off. It was Public Relation work mixed in with a little fun. This time, Sky had chosen the dress. She had not seen it yet. For today, she wore a simple flowy spring dress with a white cut off Irish type shawl that made her belly protrude a little more than it did. She wanted to look pregnant. She took her coffee to the garden. It would be the only one of the day, so she wanted to fully enjoy it. She laid back in the rocking lounging chair and look up at the blue English sky. There was not a cloud in sight. But the cloud was still in her heart. It would be until Sky came back home. She wondered if he would have some time to stay with her or if he would go back on location right away. She knew she had to continue the scenario but wanted to take a little reflective time. It was a question of mindset and making sure all her priorities were correctly placed in her brain. She hadn’t dwelled much on what Joe told her. She expected as much. She never thought Sky was perfect. He was perfect for her. She did reflect on the possibility that he would have affairs on set. He was away for so long. The best was to follow him wherever he went, but she did not want to watch him. He was not a child. Even if he made her think he was sometimes. Joe talked about past behaviors. It didn’t mean it was still like that. Even though she knew that past behavior was the best predictor of future behavior. Not too many individuals had the insight or the strength of character to change. Because of his differences, she firmly believed he could change. He was determined enough for that. Whatever Joe said, whatever the tabloids would say, she took an oath on her wedding day. She promised to trust him and to stay with him through good times and bad times. Yes, she knew it was old fashion, but that was what she wanted. She would stick by it.
Yvonne was talking to her, telling to come into the pool.
“What?”, Oh Yvonne, I think I dozed off.”, Maeva had such vivid dreams since she was pregnant. Yvonne was in front of her telling her something about a call.
“A call? Oh, is it Joe?”, said Maeva now completely awake.
“Yes Mrs. Maeva. He called me because he couldn’t reach you.”, Yvonne handed her her phone. “You forgot it inside.”, she said. She stayed there wanting to know if everything was ok.
“Joe?”, said Maeva. Yvonne was nodding.
“No, Mr. Joe called but you have to call him back.”, said Yvonne.
“Oh, I am so sorry Yvonne. I don’t know where my head is anymore.”, said Maeva dialing.
“Hello Joe?”, she didn’t get another word out. She listened.
“I spoke to Sky. He is alright. Something terrible happened there but I can’t talk about it. Sky will tell you when he comes back. It does not involve him directly. No repercussions on him. They should open the set soon. From what I understood, he would be coming straight home and the production will be cancelled or on hold for an indeterminate amount of time”, Joe spoke this in one breath, it seemed to Maeva.
“OK, OK. I only want to know when they will let him go.”, said Maeva.
“I don’t know. I will keep you informed. All is well. Stop worrying. I got to go take care of some things, OK. Talk to you soon.”, he hung up. Yvonne was there, eyes wide open, waiting.
“All is good Yvonne. Sky should be back soon. He is OK.”, Maeva started to cry as Yvonne also cried in relief. Maeva got up and both women hugged, united by this love they had for one man. Yvonne had been with Sky since he moved in this house. He was looking for a caretaker and domestic helper. The couple were referred to him by a couple who were moving to another country and had no need for the workers anymore. Sky fell in love with them as soon as he met them. Hired them on the spot. Victor and Yvonne, a sweet childless couple who were honest enough to tell Sky he didn’t need both of them. But Sky was adamant. He needed Victor for the garden, the fences, the dogs, and any repairs or tasks that were needed around and, in the house, such as his training equipment, window cleaning or anything too demanding for Yvonne. Then, he needed a cook, a house cleaner, a closet manager, clothes washer, mender, and also needed his sheet tended to as well. He finally convinced them. The couple was happy, the work was simple and easy, Sly was a great boss, often absent. But when he was there, he never treated them like servants. They were his helpers, his friends, the ones he was with almost everyday, except some days when he asked to be alone. With time, Sky was like their son. And now that Marva was there, she was like their daughter. Maeva felt it. It was easy to love them and be with them.
“Thank you, Yvonne for being there.”, Yvonne smiled. Maeva was still crying.
“My gosh, this pregnancy is making me an emotional mess.”, Maeva was wiping her eyes. Yvonne gave her a tissue from her pocket.
“Thank you”, Maeva blew her nose. “I need to eat something, I think. I am a little dizzy.”. she sat back down on the lounger.
“Stay here, lay down. How does an avocado and tomato sandwich sound? It is quick to make.”, Yvonne left.
Maeva’s head was still spinning. “Too much stress and emotions for a little old lady who got herself pregnant”, she thought. He was coming back. That is all she could think off. But when? Soon, she hoped. Then she realized she had lost her entire morning with all of this. She would have to work until late in the evening to make up for the lost time. That scenario hade to be finished quickly, now that Sky might jump into another project. She had to stop thinking. He was not even back yet.
She spent the afternoon writing and was advancing quite well. These new three monitors set-up she had asked for what the bomb! She had the original book on one, her scenario in the middle and the left one was permanently on a browser so she could research whatever she needed. As Sky had previously installed a huge sixty-five-inch tele on the wall. She could also look at the Storyboard if needed. Yvonne brought her a snack mid-day. As usual. Maeva never had to ask. It was as if Yvonne knew what she needed before she even realized it herself. When the sun started its descent into the horizon, Maeva had finished the first draft of the scenario. She would now need to review it completely to catch any errors. It would probably be ready to send to the director next week. She decided to call it a day. She felt so tired. She put her hand on her belly instinctively when she got up. She picked up the tray and went to relax in the living room.
She checked her phone and confirmed Joe hadn’t called. She did the rounds of the social media. Nothing. So strange, she thought. She closed her eyes for a second and was asleep in a minute. Yvonne came in the living room to ask about supper but turned around without a sound. She decided to wait a little and then, to prepare a quick chicken and vegetables stir-fry with quinoa.
